February 2026: Our technology is featured on the +CLOTHET website.

What is the world-leading yarn processing technology that gives shape to the ‘refined’ quality of ‘Hybrid Cotton’?

First introduced with the brand’s launch in 2018, the ‘Hybrid Cotton’ remains a timeless classic that continues to enjoy unwavering popularity. Designed to be worn under jackets, this knit top offers excellent opacity and a moderate amount of body, whilst boasting a blissfully soft feel against the skin and a lustrous, refined texture.

There is something fundamentally different about it compared to a standard T-shirt—the source of that pleasant sense of uniqueness felt the moment you slip it on lies in the accumulation of meticulous processes and an extraordinary level of dedication, from the selection of yarns to the finishing touches, that defies conventional wisdom.

To get to the heart of this ‘hybrid cotton’, we visited TOYOTASHIGYO, located at the foot of the mountains in Minamikawachi Gun, Osaka Prefecture, a company possessing advanced yarn processing technology unrivalled anywhere in the world. There, we encountered the unique artisanal techniques of ‘twisting’, ‘yarn gassing’ and ‘rewinding’—the culmination of years of refinement by a manufacturer with a 89-year tradition. It was a realm of unrivalled mastery.

The yarn used in ELDOR undergoes an exceptional and highly artistic gas-singeing process, made possible through the innovative craftsmanship and advanced technical expertise of a world-class Japanese manufacturer.

During this process, each individual yarn is carefully passed through a flame, removing surface fibers from every angle. This meticulous treatment creates a truly special yarn with remarkable resistance to pilling, an elegant luster, and an exceptionally smooth touch.

YarnGassing is a highly specialized technique that requires precise control of flame intensity and yarn speed, both of which must be adjusted according to the characteristics of the yarn. Processing ultra-fine 200-count spun yarn, in particular, demands extraordinary skill and experience, making it an exceptionally rare achievement even on a global scale.

For ELDOR, we have chosen to work with a Japanese company that possesses more than 50 years of expertise in yarn processing. Their unrivaled craftsmanship enables a level of quality that can truly be regarded as among the finest in the world.

For the brushed fleece backing, we have generously used 100% SUVIN cotton yarn supplied by Taisho Spinning, a fellow company based in Senshu, Osaka. The yarn is specially twisted and processed by TOYOTASHIGYO to enhance its texture, durability, and comfort.
For the outer surface, we have selected Raffy yarn from Taisho Spinning. By incorporating reclaimed cotton fibers, Raffy yarn creates a naturally uneven texture that delivers both a distinctive vintage character and refined visual appeal.
The result is a simple yet striking design with a unique presence—one that effortlessly complements and enhances your individuality.

Twisted Path and a Play with Fire

Miwa Textile Industry × Toyotashigyo (Osaka) / Twisted Path and a Play with Fire

Using yarns crafted with utmost creativity—such as mixed counts, kabe-yori (combined twisting of different yarn counts), and gas-burning—we carefully knitted this fabric to perfection.

Miwa Textile Industry is a knitter well-known in past Wakayama Daibakusho projects for their tightly knitted, beautifully uniform fabrics. For this project, Miwa Textile chose to partner with Toyotashigyo, a yarn-processing company in Osaka renowned for twisting techniques and gas-burning. Together, we developed a completely new type of sweatshirt by applying Toyotashigyo’s full technical expertise in gas-burned twisted yarn to a classic 18-gauge fleece.

For the face yarn, three strands of rare Pima cotton fine count (80 count) slub yarn are twisted together into one strand. This three-ply twist increases strength and creates an exceptionally clean and even surface.

We then applied gas-burning to this three-ply twist. Gas-burning is a technique in which yarn is passed through a burner to singe off surface fuzz. At Toyotashigyo, the yarn is exposed to flames from all 360 degrees, removing the fuzz evenly. This further refines the fine three-ply yarn, resulting in a beautifully luminous heather-gray outer surface.

For the inner fleece loops, we used an extraordinary yarn formed by twisting together five strands—combining the same 80s three-ply yarn used on the surface with an additional 20-count two-ply yarn. The method of twisting different yarn counts together is called kabe-yori, and it is said to be extremely rare in sweatshirt production. Kabe-yori yarn develops a wavy, uneven texture and is often used in fabrics designed to have a natural crinkled look.

Here, that textured quality is intentionally used on the inside of the sweatshirt to create better drape, improved moisture release, and enhanced comfort—an experimental approach, to say the least.

New discoveries are often born from detours and playful curiosity. This sweatshirt embodies that forward-looking spirit of creative exploration.

Our introductory article on Makuake

Bake the thread. The cotton thread that is the material is a baked thread.High-quality Supima cotton thread lets you pass thread a it in the fire and bake. it must not overbake. If the thread is overbaked, the thread itself will catch fire, and there is a danger that the raw material will be completely burnt. The factory is located in the mountains of Kawachi, Osaka. Toyotashigyo, a veteran of this industry for 70 years, has a rough but delicate technique. The flame burns off useless fluff and impurities and tightens the thread. As a result, the woven fabric is lustrous, and bright colors can be produced by dyeing. In addition, the durability improves because the threads are tightened by baking. A mysterious and extremely dangerous feat. A method that has been used in this country for over 100 years is called Gas Singeing  process. Few people know. The cotton thread that has been thoroughly Gas Singeing  process is sent into the kiln, where it undergoes a stable process called Heat set processing under high temperature and high pressure. After Heat set processing, leaving it to rest for several days also affects the subsequent quality. Careful skill is required.
These three process have created unprecedented cotton fabrics.
